The Charter High School for Law and Social Justice is seeking qualified candidates for the position of ELA Teacher for the 2017-2018 school year.

Who are we?

The Charter High School for Law and Social Justice will provide students from the Bronx with a comprehensive high school education and lay the academic and social groundwork for success in college and careers. Using a theme of law and social justice, the School will engage, inspire, and empower students, and will equip them with the academic skills to earn a Regents diploma and gain admission to the college of their choice prepared for success. The School will create a pathway for its students to law school and careers as attorneys. The pathway will include mentoring opportunities with law students and attorneys and partnerships with institutions of higher learning. These institutions will offer college and law school experiences to our students and share with them the academic benchmarks and habits necessary to gain entrance to college and law school.

Our ideal ELA candidates will possess the following qualifications:

  • A minimum of three years teaching experience in an urban, high needs secondary school setting
  • Proven ability to provide high quality teaching of all sections of high school English including Freshman Composition and Literature, Sophomore Reading and Writing workshop, SAT verbal and writing prep, and Speech.
  • Track record in obtaining dramatic and measurable results in academic, social, and emotional skills
  • Experience in curriculum planning using Understanding By Design
  • Deep content knowledge and the ability to effectively teach that knowledge to a range of secondary grades and to explain that knowledge to students with a variety of ability levels
  • Deep understanding of Common Core standards and high-quality, exciting teaching practices that will ensure students exceed those standards
  • Experience with and a deep understanding of both formative and summative assessments and creating corresponding action plans
  • Experience with planning and executing advisory and a college readiness program for high school students
  • Work in law and social justice projects in and out of schools settings
  • Experience working within teacher teams
  • Master's Degree strongly preferred
  • Flexibility and "Roll-up my sleeves" attitude and a willingness to take on additional roles as it relates to the needs of a start-up organization.
